BPV By: Chun-Chan

I chose this issue because I get BPV, and I wanted to learn more about it and why it is caused. This expands my learning so that I know what I probably shouldn’t do, or else I might end up getting dizzy more often. This is important because lots of people get it, especially females, so I think that it is good for people to know what BPV really is, instead of thinking that when you are dizzy, that it is because of dehydration. It affects teenagers because being dizzy in class is hard for you to focus, and it affects teenagers, especially girls, because when you get BPV, you shouldn’t walk around, and it gets really annoying for people.
I learnt that BPV is more common with females than males, and that you can actually trigger it, and it isn’t just something that randomly comes up. I also learnt that it is more common when you get stressed out. I think that this issue is very annoying, but it is also very interesting, because some tiny little crystals in your ear can easily affect your eyesight completely by making you go dizzy. I also think that this topic is quite interesting because you can’t get rid of it automatically, and sometimes it can make you feel like your eyeballs are not under your control. My thinking has now changed, because I thought that it was just rotten luck for me to get BPV, but it turns out that lots of people get BPV. This influences my thoughts about wellness, because I know know why and how BPV is caused.

Gluten – Christian

Is wheat inadequate? Why is this substance we perceive as harmless so “bad” for all of us? Well, in the big picture wheat is surprisingly awful, and for that same reason many athletes, Hollywood superstars and chefs have given up wheat. One of the easiest ways to keep yourself healthy is by not consuming wheat. Avoiding the consumption of wheat is absolutely necessary because it has heaps of gluten, minimal nutrients, and it is overly processed.

Gluten is single handedly the most detrimental proportion of wheat. In fact, 14 kilograms of rice has an equivalent amount of gluten to 1 kilogram of bread? Scary, isn’t it? In reality, wheat has the highest amount of gluten compared to any other grain. It sits at 70% when based on the total amount of protein in the grain. In comparison, rice sits snugly at 5%, corn lays at 55%, oats end up at 16%, and rye equalizes at about 40%. That’s why wheat is the worst grain in the Poaceae family, and overall. In fact, reality is contradictory to what most people believe. Gluten is actually a sticky, stretchable protein, what holds grains together, (That’s why gluten is latin for glue), but how exactly does gluten affect a human? Well, when gluten first enters our stomach, instead of doing what food normally does ( Traveling through the center, then getting absorbed into the cell and later absorbed into the bloodstream, where it would nourish the body) gluten creates a permeable hole between the cells and goes directly into the bloodstream, to create antibodies, and destroy body tissue ( Resulting to leaky gut) Additionally there are many diseases found in patients with gluten sensitivity, they are:

Angina Pectoris (chest pain / pressure), Anorexia, Immunoglobulin Opathies, Antiphospholipid syndrome, Anxiety, Apathy, Aphthous ulcers and canker sores, Aortic Vasculitis, four types of Arthritis, Abdominal pain and distention, Spontaneous abortion, Addison’s Disease, ADHD, ADD, Alopecia (hair loss), seven different nutrition related Anemia, Ataxia, Atherosclerosis, Autism and other learning disorders, Cholangitis (gallbladder), Dermatitis Herpetiformis, Autoimmune hepatitis, Polyglandular syndrome, Thyroiditis (hypothyroidism), Bitot’s spots, Blepharitis, Abnormal blurry vision, Bone pain, Bone fractures, Cachexia, Bronchiectasis, Bronchoalveolitis, Adenocarcinoma of the intestine, Small cell esophageal cancer, Melanoma, Asthma, Cardiomegaly, Cardiomyopathy, Cataracts, Cerebral perfusion abnormalities, Cheilosis, Chorea, Coagulation abnormalities, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Chronic constipation, Coronary artery disease, Diarrhea, Lymphoma, Cutaneous vasculitis, Cystic fibrosis, Delayed puberty, Failure to thrive, Dementia, Depression, Dermatomyositis, Diabetes Mellitus type I, Down syndrome, Dysmenorrhea, Dysgeusia, Duodenal erosions, Edema, Eczema, Dysphagia, Epilepsy, Spontaneous nose bleeds, Erythema nodosum, CFS, Growth retardation, Mental retardation, Secondary food allergy response, Blood in the stool, Gastric bloating, Grave’s disease, Bleeding gums, hair loss, heartburn, H. pylori infection, Hives, NAFL, Malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies, Infertility, Hypogonadism, Hypoglycemia, Hyposplenism, Thrombocytopenia, Impotence, Osteoporosis, Insomnia, IBS, Keratomalacia, Lactose intolerance, Loss of smell, Non Hodgkin lymphoma, Early menopause, Migraine headache, Multiple sclerosis, Muscle wasting, Myopathy, Obesity, Osteomalacia, Parathyroid carcinoma, Pancreatic insufficiency, Polymyositis, PMS, Biliary cirrhosis, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Sjogren’s syndrome, Short stature, Scleroderma, Steatorrhea and Spina bifida.

That’s just to list a few. Additionally these diseases show that anybody can be born with gluten sensitivity, however the fact of the matter is that a large amount of these illnesses are aggravated by gluten. So we should all rethink eating wheat no matter who we are.

Finally many famous people have given up wheat like for a competitive edge and healthy lifestyle, like: LeBron James (NBA), Kobe Bryant (NBA), Aaron Rodgers (NFL), Novak Djokovic (#1 Tennis player in the world), Justin Rose (Golfer), Matthew McConaughey (Actor), Miley Cyrus (Singer), Gary Ablett (AFL), Tom Jones (Singer), Pete Evans (Chef and judge of My Kitchen Rules Australia), and David Reynolds (V8 Supercars). Also The Melbourne Football Club (nicknamed The Demons), Aussie Cricket Team (Won the world cup for cricket), and an English Premier League soccer team. The similarities through these teams is that they all kept quiet about their healthy diet to have an advantage. The only reason the world knows is because their doctors told the world their secret.

Cell phone addiction – Mao

I chose this topic because I learned that it is one of the big issues these days and there are many physical effects, and mental and emotional impacts that can cause stress and I wanted to know more about it.Also most of the teenagers owns a phone nowadays and many people are addicted to their cell phone and I think I am one of them so I was really interested to it.

By doing a research about cell phone addiction, I learned some new ways of how cell phone addiction can affect you, and I also learned is that it is not too late even though you are already addicted to your cell phone because there are still many ways that you can get rid of it.

Also I feel that I am one of the people who are addicted to their phones and other devices including laptops so I will try to use my phone less from now on and use my time more effectively.

Social Anxiety – Aina

I chose this issue because this is the most common anxiety in the whole world for preteens and for teenagers. This affects both you and your family because social anxiety can pass down your family tree because you can see if your parents have social anxiety OR your surroundings can affect you. Since everyone has social anxiety at some points, I know that sometimes when you get social anxiety, you start to shake, sweat, or even cry. My connections are very similar because whenever I’m nervous of something I tend to start to have fear of my surroundings or when I’m in the middle of attention, I tend to freak out. This issue is important because every teenager in the world can get social anxiety in a click, if they aren’t aware of this issue then it could really affect them in many ways.

When I started to research about social anxiety, I found out that this social anxiety disorder is actually the third largest mental health care problem in the world today. The reason why it’s the largest mental health care today is because teenagers often want to fit in or they either want to make sure they always look good and say the right things, they always feel like everyone’s eyes are on them. You can’t avoid it. It expanded my learning a lot because now that I’m aware of it, I can prevent it from getting serious. What I thought about this issue before I started researching is that everyone had it and as you start getting more insecure it would dig deeper. Something interesting I learned is that for children below 12 years old, symptoms of social anxiety may represent clinging behaviors, tantrums, and even selective mutism (SM). My perspective changed by a lot because now I understand people who have the social anxiety disorder and I understand that they can’t perform well in social situations. Some misunderstandings in this topic is that some people believe that if they are nervous in a social situation, they automatically think that they have the social anxiety disorder, but it’s not always because of that. Usually it’s just our fears kicking in. The problem of this issue is that you cannot get rid of it, but, you can treat it by visiting a direct cognitive-behavioral therapist, since it’s a long-term disorder. This influences my thinking of wellness because it connects to how people think and how people observe things in social situations.

Cervical Cancer – Yun A

I chose this issue because I became interested when one of my friends told me about this disease, complaining that the vaccine hurt so much. I was surprised that there was a vaccine for cancer, and was curious about it. As I researched, this affected me a lot. I became more aware of the possibilities of my future and was surprised to find out that my age was the right age to get a vaccine. It connects to my previous learning about smoking(it was one of the acts that could highly risk getting cervical cancer), and the reproduction unit, learning more about the uterus. This issue is relevant to me because all females contain the danger of getting cervical cancer, and thus should always be aware of their health status. This is important because a lot of people still aren’t well aware of the cause and effects of cervical cancer and didn’t get a vaccine when it was most effective for you. This affects teenagers because by learning about what causes cervical cancer and the danger of it, teenagers can be more aware of the things they do and think once more. Also, though there isn’t a high chance of teenagers getting this cancer(sometimes it takes a very long time to actually show symptoms), if it does, then it will critically affect the teenager’s wellness in all 4 parts.

The basic form of the uterus, the location of the cervix and where the cancer usually is placed

I learned that cervical cancer has a cause clearly proved, different from other cancers, and have a vaccine that can prevent. Also, I was unaware that so many people were unaware of the disease and didn’t do anything much sooner that could’ve changed their lives. It expanded my learning by teaching me some actions I should consider more carefully before doing it, such as smoking and avoid exposure to HPV. My opinion about this issue is that although it has a clear cause and a marvelous vaccine that will mostly decrease the risk of getting this cancer, people need to be more alert, informed, and aware of cervical cancer. Only 40% of American woman knew what HPV Infection was, and just about half of them knew that it was the cause of cervical cancer. I think that there should be something to change this ignorance. It was surprising at how much death it caused(4th most death for female patients), and also unexpected. Throughout the research, my thinking changed; people should be more specifically informed of this cervical cancer, and not just vaguely think that it’s quite dangerous. Maybe we could add a lesson for specific diseases in wellness class. One misunderstanding about this topic is that the vaccine may heal everything caused by HPV, but it is not true. It only prevents ‘some’ strains caused by HPV. A problem is that in some low-income or developing countries, the number one cause of people dying is because of cervical cancer. The solution to this is to make the vaccine a requirement so everyone could prevent this from happening. This influenced my thinking about wellness because now I know how cervical cancer is caused, and how it harms a person mentally(mental fog), emotionally(depression), physically(cervix damaged/blood and pain), and socially(social relationships with people will be restricted when you get cancer)

Sleep Deprivation – Alyssa

I chose this issue because it is important for young adults to be aware of how important sleep is to your body and how this issue can affect all aspects of wellness, from your social skills to your mental health. It affects you because it can cause problems at school, your behavior and your relationships with friends and family. I can connect to this issue because whenever I don’t get more than 5 hours of sleep a night, I’ll start losing my focus in class and miss out on what the teacher is teaching. I also tend to be moodier and have less patience when I’m around people, which also causes stress and makes me unproductive throughout the day. This matter affects teenagers because it impairs their attention, alertness, problem solving skills and reasoning overtime. It also causes you to forget whatever you learned or experienced that day. The lack of sleep also makes you forgetful. Brain events called sharp wave ripples make our memory stronger, and occurs mostly during the deepest levels of sleep. Without sleep, there would be limited time for the wave ripples to improve our memory.

Sleep deprivation also affects teenagers because it changes their appearance. The lack of sleep gives people sallow (unhealthy yellow, pale brown) skin, puffy eyes and dark circles under eyes. The lack of sleep also releases too much of the stress hormone ‘cortisol’, which breaks down the collagen in your skin and makes it wrinkly. Collagen is an important protein in your body that holds it together. The absence of rest also causes your body to release too little growth hormones, which usually get released during sleep- which causes delays in growth, the increase of muscle mass, and the strengthening of bones.

I learnt that sleep deprivation has very serious consequences and it is important to know about this topic so we can avoid various diseases and problems in education and relationships with others. Some solutions we can use to increase the amount of sleep we get is doing schoolwork as soon as you get back home- that way, you won’t procrastinate and start your mound of homework instead of sleeping. Taking advantage of the extra sleeping time on the weekends is also a good way to increase the amount of sleep you get, and staying away from electronics and caffeine could also help you sleep better. Starting an improved sleep schedule will help you get used to sleeping more every day.

This influences my thinking in wellness because now I know that even though the lack of sleep may look like it only affects your appearance, it affects you mentally and physically too.

This image shows the effect of sleep deprivation on the face. As seen on the picture on the right, the girl looks slightly happier when she has a sufficient amount of sleep every night than when she has less than 3 hours of sleep every night, and also looks more awake with a brighter face.

Protein – Olivia

I chose this issue because I find this topic very interesting and more people need to know how important protein is to our health. Protein is important for everyone in order to have a body that is healthy and strong, without it, that is nearly impossible. Before researching in depth about this topic, I knew that it was it is crucial for our body and different sources of protein. During the first unit of wellness, I learned more about protein and where to find it. This is important to all teenagers because without it, the unfortunate consequences vary.

From researching about this issue, I found out the different amounts of protein each person needs. I had a rough idea on how much I needed, but I expanded my learning about how different people need different amounts of protein based on different ages, gender, activity levels. I believe that without protein, you can not be healthy, and think it’s important for everyone to know that. Some new information that I found surprising was that even rice and corn has protein a few grams of protein. A lot of people think that you can never have enough protein, but that’s incorrect. Having too much protein can be dangerous to people with kidney disease. A common misunderstanding about this topic, is that you can only get protein from meat. That is totally false. Nuts, tofu, beans and many other animal free products can give you the right amount of protein that your body needs. In conclusion, I think people need to know how much protein they for themselves, and how much they are currently getting. It’s important to know how much they are getting in order to stay healthy.

Monophobia – Mina

Monophobia is a type of mental syndrome that makes people be afraid of being by themselves. I chose this issue because I thought monophobia is an interesting disease that I want to learn more about. As I mentioned, monophobia makes people feel scared when they are alone. And one thing that is scary about monophobia is that people who have monophobia don’t even notice that they have it. That point is defined that we all would have monophobia, just didn’t know if we do. I already knew that Monophobia makes people be afraid of being alone, but I didn’t know that people who have monophobia don’t know if they have it or not. Monophobia can make people die because of the extreme scare so it might be dangerous if we have it. Monophobia usually happens to teenagers. I am one of the teenagers which means monophobia can affect to me as well.

I still think that monophobia is dangerous because it happens between teenagers (which includes me), and it was really surprising when I first realized that. Before I do the research I misunderstood monophobia as a depression but now I know that it’s not a type of depression. Fortunately, monophobia is treatable. So the only important thing that is left is to find it as soon as possible. Here is a site which has some questions that will help you to see if you have monophobia or not. (http://www.changethatsrightnow.com/being-alone-phobia/online-test/) This issue made me re-think why wellness is important.

G.M.O. vs. Organic Food By: Andi

I chose to present about this topic because millions of people around the world are unaware of what is really in their food. People are suffering from random occurring diseases and don’t know the cause and normally they wouldn’t see their food as the cause because they have been eating the same thing for a while. Some people still don’t even know that they could be eating chemicals in their food, some just don’t care and carry on eating, but now the public is more aware than ever and changing their diets to purely organic food. This issue impacts teenagers too because everybody eats.

Upon researching about this topic I learned that both G.M. food and Organic food have their pros and their cons. Though knowing all the ups and downs it is in fact better to eat Organic food rather than G.M. food. However, it is only better if you eat healthy Organic food and not fatty Organic food.
