Unit 4: Reproductive Health and Relationships

Great work on your Tobacco Mixed Media Projects!  Everyone did such a great job! We’re now moving on to our last Unit of the the year, Reproductive Health and Relationships. Below you will find the Unit Understandings, Essential Questions, Outcomes, and the chapter in our Textbook that we’ll be working with.  If you have any questions at all, feel free to come and see me at any time!

UNIT UNDERSTANDINGS

  • Students will understand that personal choices can cause or prevent reproductive health problems for males and females.
  •  Students will understand the physical, mental, and emotional changes they will experience during puberty in preparation for adult.

  1. Why do we develop at different rates?
  2. Why is it important to understand proper health care during this time of transition?

Activity: How does nicotine  negatively effect the body (list 5 ways)?  What are 5 symptoms of nicotine withdrawal?

 

STATION 7: The rise of E-Cigarettes and Vapes E-cigarette sales have increased dramatically in the last 3 years, with a target on young adults.  Check out the info-graphic below from www.drugabuse.gov.

Activity:  Discuss with a partner your impressions of the info-graphic and decide on two refusal skills that can be used specifically to address e-cigarettes.  Write these refusal skills in your notes.  You can also find the infographic at the back of the room.

Unit 2 Review

We will be taking our end of the Unit Assessment this Friday.  I’ve placed some guide questions below to help you review.  Think back on all of our class discussions and activities about Respect, Social Thinking, Bullying, Conflict, and Conflict Management. Unit 2 Project: Hurtful Behaviors and Conflict Management

We’ve spent a number of classes discussing the importance of Respect, types of Respect we feel most important to us, ways of showing respect, types of disrespect, cyber bullying, social media, and ways of addressing disrespect.  In the upcoming classes you will be working on a mini-lesson that your group will be using to “teach” the class about Hurtful Behaviors and Conflict Management.

Your goal:  To produce a 2-page comic strip to contribute to the class “Anti-bullying Magazine.”  complete with a clear understanding of a social issue and clear guidelines for how that can be resolved through Conflict and Resolution skills.

Start the Ripple!

We’ve spent the past few days discussing what Respect means to us, how we show respect in different cultures, and what forms of disrespect there are.  We’ve also done skits of different situations in which different forms of Respect are shown.  As reminders to ourselves, we are finishing up our RESPECT cut-outs with our own definitions and synonyms of respect.

Watch this video below of middle school students who compiled their own ideas of respect how young people can make a difference!  The message?  Start the Ripple!

Social Thinking: Thinking about our Behaviors and those of others

Social Thinking is something we try to develop as we go through adolescence.  What is it?!

In order to avoid hurtful behaviors, it is important to think about our social thinking and how it affects our social behaviors.

Respect in Action!

Today we’ll be working on skits revolving around different topics of respect.  Choose one of the topics below for your skit and come up with a 2 minute skit that we will film in class. The guidelines are below. Have fun! 🙂

TOPICS:

  1. Respecting Differences (culturally, beliefs, etc)
  2. Self-Respect
  3. Respecting Rules
  4. Respecting the feelings of others
  5. Respecting one’s privacy

GUIDELINES:

  • Needs to have a narrator and different characters
  • Needs to include a description of the “issue”
  • Needs to show the negative effects on a person
  • Needs to show a clear strategy for positively dealing with the issue
  • Everyone needs to be involved

Unit 2: Rights and Respect

Great work on our Fitness and Nutrition unit!  This week we will begin our unit on Rights and Respect:

Unit Understandings

  • Students will understand that the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors affect health behaviors.
  • Students will understand that advocating for personal, family and community health promotes healthy behaviors and choices.
