The health issue I would like to present today is Lucid Dreaming.
Before we start I would like to give you a brief explanation on what lucid dreaming is. Lucid dreaming is the ability to realize you are in a dream and control the dream you are having. For example when you realize you are in a dream you can control what happens and you can be in the dream.
This issue is important because many important theories have come from lucid dreaming such as albert einstein and the principle of relativity or paul mccartney when he composed the entire melody for his song “yesterday” in a lucid dream. .
I picked this issue because lucid dreaming is an amazing phenomenon that i want to experience one day. Also can you imagine being able to control you dreams.
This issue affects teenagers because Lucid dreaming can make teens creative and can help them overcome fears and phobias. That is because there is a free flow of ideas coming from the unconscious mind.
What I learned about lucid dreaming is that it is not as simple as it looks. I think lucid dreaming is a very exciting experience because it shows the power of your mind and what you can do with it. I mean who wouldn’t want to play a sport in front of thousands of people or live in the house of your dream.
Some interesting facts about this issue are:
- Techniques of lucid dreaming are DILD,MILD and WILD. DILD is when you notice something in the dream that makes you know you are dreaming. Mild is when you convince you are going to lucid dream tonight and when you are in a dream you will instantly know you are dreaming. Wild is when you trick your mind into thinking you are asleep which will bring you into a dream.
- When we are dreaming we are in a stage called R.E.M (rapid eye movement) it helps us not act out our dreams in real life. But sometimes we may not be in R.E.M mode and that’s how sleepwalking is caused.
- How to Lucid Dream. Step 1. Keep a dream journal 2. Convince yourself that you are going to lucid dream 3. When you are in a dream look at your hands usually in dreams you will notice that you have more or less fingers. 4. Look for un-ordinary stuff. Maybe you will be in your room for one minute then Egypt for the next. That will be an obvious sign to your mind that you are dreaming.
I believe that lucid dreaming is a very important because it helped create many groundbreaking achievements that led to the change in history . It also is a very exciting way to relieve stress.
What I think of this, this issue is important for you to know about because with this strategy you can relieve stress easier and improve memory.
I choose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to research about, and it was surprising for me that synesthetes (people who have synesthesia) see words or numbers as certain colors, sounds, or smell. Only 1 and 2000 people have this disorder, but it was kind of mind-blowing that people only can see colours, smell, and hear instead of seeing the actual objects, and I couldn’t really imagine it. And, people have some stereotypes to synesthetes, and for example one of the stereotype is that synesthetes are bad at math. I wanted to know why do people created these stereotypes, so I thought it would be fun to research about it.
By doing this topic, I learned that synesthesia could genetically be passed from parents to child, so if one of your family memebers have synesthesia, you might also have it. Also, there isn’t a solution to cure synesthesia so once you have it, you have to live your entire life having synesthesia. There are different kind of syenesthesias, but one of the most common one is colour-graphemic synesthesia, when you see numbers or words in a certain colour. For example, if you have colour-graphemic synesthesia, you might see 7 as red. There are different ones related to smell and hearings, it is when you see numbers or words in a certain smell or sound. Some examples are that you might smell the number 6 as smell of soap and number 5 as a sound of whistle. And there are some negative and positive effects of synesthesia. One positive effect is that if you have synesthesia, you have a good memory and you can remember things really easily. One negative effect is you might feel isolated because people think that you are weird, you see different thing as them, so you might fee isolated from the society. The last thing I learned was that you have to be patient, because synesthetes have hard time to remember all the smells, colors, and sound just by hearing. So, you have to be patient with them and kindly repeat the word or numbers you said or help them to remember it.
In my health buzz I learned about the affects of having HIV. The Human Immunodeficiency virus is know to be one of the deadliest virus’s.
I chose this issue because it was Ironic, Sad and i wanted to know how the people with this phobia would react to long words. This affects me because I live in an international school and I move to different countries a lot. Moving to different countries means that I might then have a chance of meeting someone with this fear so I might be able to help them with this issue. I already knew before i started researching it was the fear of long words or else I didn’t really know anything about the topic. This issue affects teenagers mostly because friendships are very important at that age. If people think the people who have this phobia are weird they probably don’t want to be friends with them.
I learnt about this issue because the word is sort of Ironic and it’s an interesting word. This expanded my learning of phobias. I found the symptoms really interesting because of what they would do and just words can be scary. Some problems with this issue could be in school as a teenager learning long words could make them start crying run away and have anxiety attacks. This influences my learning in wellness by learning that there is so many parts of wellness and Phobias are one of them.
The issue is important because it is a common skin disease without a proper cure and affects many children. I picked the issue because I was curious about its full extent and also because I was diagnosed with it as a child. Prior to this research, I knew that it was characterised by inflamed, cracking, scaling and/or unnaturally thick skin. Atopic dermatitis heavily affects teenagers, especially since 85% of the affected are under 5 years of age and their teen selves usually still have memories of their experiences with the disease.
I learned that atopic dermatitis does not have an existing cure, which really surprised me due to it being so common. This expanded and connected to previous learning because both my parents and doctor have always been cautious about me having it. I believe that if doctors and scientists can make skin products like moisturiser and whitening cream, then they should be able to find a proper cure to atopic dermatitis as well. One misunderstanding about atopic dermatitis is that it’s the same thing as contact dermatitis (a similar disease, but requires physical contact with an irritating substance). Two major problems that come with this disease are that it worsens when the skin comes in contact with chlorine and that it tends to damage the skin of small children. For those who have atopic dermatitis, some important solutions are to stay away from touching water for over 20 minutes at a time, see a dermatologist, and to take whatever medicine their doctor may have recommended. In all honesty, I believe that this influenced my thinking in the sense that it made me more cautious about taking my medication, especially after seeing so many pictures of the effects of atopic dermatitis without medication on the internet.
I chose Bulimia Nervosa because I knew a friend who experienced this disorder and I also thought it would be an interesting topic to research about. This affects me because since it is most likely for girls to get it I wanted to make sure I was aware and I also have a sister so I can tell her about that too. I already knew that Bulimia nervosa was a life threatening eating disorder and you purposefully make yourself vomit out your food, I also knew that it was most likely for women to get it than men. This connects to previous learnings because during the nutrition unit we learned that you need a certain amount of a specific food group and when you have bulimia nervosa you cant get that because you either aren’t eating that food and burning up the calories you received from eating that or you are vomiting up that food. This issue is relevant to me because I am a girl so I have a higher chance of getting this eating disorder than others and also it is important because this is life threatening and since I am aware about this topic I can now aware other people about it and prevent people from continuing. This affects teenagers because some teenagers go through really bad insecurity about themselves since they are experiencing that they could then lead to this.
From this issue I learned that I should eat the right amount of foods all the time and that I shouldn’t stop myself from eating because that can lead to very bad causes. This expanded my learning because its given me more ways on how to keep my body healthy and also to keep my health in good shape. My opinion about this issue is they should aware people more about this because it has very bad effects in the end and its common for girls to get it. What surprised me about this issue is that there are actually lost of different symptoms and signs of how to tell when someone has bulimia nervosa. This can be applied to real life situations because when someone has these signs and symptoms and I can then tell what they are going through and also warn them and aware them about what can happen to them and also help them to stop. Some problems about this issue are that its very easy to get because most girls suffer with insecurity and that can easily cause them to become bulimic. This influences my thinking about wellness because I now know that I have to get my right amount of food everyday and I have to balance the amount of workout I have and the amount of food that I eat.
I chose this issue because I was intrigued by the fact that there is such thing called :Exploding Head Syndrome and wanted to learn more about it. To be honest, this does not affect me nor my family because we do not do things that would increase chances of EHS into our lives. Honestly, I did not know anything about this topic before hand. It was a new topic that I was intrigued about and wanted to learn more. Besides, at least I knew it had something to do with your head. This issue is important because I wanted to warn everyone that this is a benign syndrome and cannot hurt you, therefore there is no reason to freak out if you have it. This affects teenagers because it’s usually at this age where we want to go to sleep very late and wake up very late, usually having a very messed up schedule. This is was promotes EHS and therefore making us vulnerable to experiencing it.
I learned that there are things that could be very scary in life, but can also be harmless, so there is nothing to worry about. I also learned there is something called Exploding Head Syndrome which I thought was very interesting. This expanded my thinking because it helped me learn that there are certain types of suffering that doesn’t require physical pain, and got me thinking of others ways that could make one suffer without physical pain. (Not that I would torture anybody, just saying I was wondering) MY opinion on this issue is that honestly, I think it’s not that bad and that it does not require immediate help if diagnosed with it. Especially knowing the fact that its harmless, just very annoying. What was very surprising about this issue was the fact that it did not need to seek immediate help and was completely harmless. Some misunderstandings about this issue was that at first I thought there was no known cause, but then realized the website was slightly out of date and that there were actually a couple of known causes. Some solutions for this issue is that people could start to lower their stress levels and start going to sleep at a regular and constant time, meaning going to sleep everyday at the same time, so that your brain does not get confused during sleep. This influenced my thinking of wellness because I thought wellness was only about being healthy and maintaining your body in a good shape, but now I know there is psychological things involved.
I chose this issue because I wanted to understand why people choose to commit suicide. Another reason that I wanted to do do this was because of the book, 13 Reasons Why, by Jay Asher. The book is about a teenage girl who commits suicide and sends tapes out to the 13 people who had an influence o her decisions. This issue affects teenagers because all teens go through stages where they feel uncertain and scared and uncomfortable about themselves and the life that they are living and one thought that probably goes through their brain is about suicide and maybe death. I learned that people kill themselves to get away from the problem, they have made a big mistake, they are depressed, or they just want to die.
I learned that there are many reasons that people commit suicide, social concerns and mental health concerns. I also learned that you can stop a person from killing themselves by simply listening to them and showing that you care. This topic is relevant to wellness because one cause of suicide is depression and depression is an indication of mental health problems.
This is a semi colin, it is a symbol of surviving or stopping suicidal thoughts or attempts. The semi colin is used because the author could have ended the sentence but she continued it. The person who survived or chose to stop the attempts and thoughts could have stopped their life forever but instead they chose to continue it.
