The Mandela Effect by Chloe Kim

I chose this issue because this has probably affected some of the people in our grade, and it has already taken place with me. This expands my learning as it makes me more aware of mind related tricks/illusions that happen due to the mind’s complexity. It is important that others are aware of this as well as an explanation to false memories they have in common with a group of people. This affects teenagers as the Mandela Effect can take place with anyone at any time, for several different reasons.

I learned that the Mandela Effect was named after an incident where a group of people believed hearing of Nelson Mandela’s death and even seeing his funeral on TV when, actually, it never happened. It takes place due to seeing alternatives of something too often (such as Berenstain Books, which are thought to be spelled Berenstein possible because of other words such as Einstein), if someone around you says something looks different it may influence your opinion, or because of cognitive dissonance which is when one’s thoughts, opinions or beliefs may change in result of a change in your behavior or attitude. I think that the Mandela Effect is very interesting as it is more than just false memory – it takes place with a group of people. It is interesting that a group of people that can be completely unrelated to each other can all share a false memory. Now I am more aware of the possible tricks a mind can play on one, while the saying is usually about trusting what you see. I have a broader perspective when it comes to people having a false memory now.

Down Syndrome-CJ

I choose this topic because it is a very worldwide disease that over 6000 infants are born with every year. I’ve met many down syndrome kids all around the world and would love to learn about their disease. Down syndrome is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome. With Down syndrome, the extra chromosome causes delays in the way a child develops, mentally and physically. But this disease is actually quite common, as out of 700 newborns 1 will have the disease (Down Syndrome) a number of down syndrome kids depends on their nationality. Down syndrome is caused by a gene before birth, People without down syndrome usually are born with 46 chromosomes and down syndrome kid is born with 47 chromosomes this makes it so that kids with extra chromosomes, their brain and or bodies develop in many different ways. Have kids with down syndrome. Many down syndromes were abandoned by their parents as they did not want a child that did not look like everyone else. This lead to these kids not having real parents and did not have a proper upbringing.

I also learned that down syndrome is carried through genetics meaning that you may carry the disease of down syndrome. So if your kids have down syndrome, you are very likely to carry the genetics or your partner. If you have a down syndrome kid the chances of having another one is very high. Down syndrome takes serious care and should never be treated with disrespect. People with down syndrome suffer hard lives with dangerous type so living as they are faced with living only until they are only teenagers or to their 20s. They also face bullying in their junior life. Its hard being a down syndrome kid and they need to be treated properly.

HealthBuzz- Max

The health issue I would like to present today is Lucid Dreaming.

Before we start I would like to give you a brief explanation on what lucid dreaming is. Lucid dreaming is the ability to realize you are in a dream and control the dream you are having. For example when you realize you are in a dream you can control what happens and you can be in the dream.

This issue is important because many important theories have come from lucid dreaming such as albert einstein and the principle of relativity or paul mccartney when he composed the entire melody for his song “yesterday” in a lucid dream. .

I picked this issue because lucid dreaming is an amazing phenomenon that i want to experience one day. Also can you imagine being able to control you dreams.

This issue affects teenagers because Lucid dreaming can make teens creative and can help them overcome fears and phobias. That is because there is a free flow of ideas coming from the unconscious mind.

What I learned about lucid dreaming is that it is not as simple as it looks. I think lucid dreaming is a very exciting experience because it shows the power of your mind and what you can do with it. I mean who wouldn’t want to play a sport in front of thousands of people or live in the house of your dream.

Some interesting facts about this issue are:

  1. Techniques of lucid dreaming are DILD,MILD and WILD. DILD is when you notice something in the dream that makes you know you are dreaming. Mild is when you convince you are going to lucid dream tonight and when you are in a dream you will instantly know you are dreaming. Wild is when you trick your mind into thinking you are asleep which will bring you into a dream.
  1.  When we are dreaming we are in a stage called R.E.M (rapid eye movement) it helps us not act out our dreams in real life. But sometimes we may not be in R.E.M mode and that’s how sleepwalking is caused.
  1. How to Lucid Dream. Step 1. Keep a dream journal 2. Convince yourself that you are going to lucid dream 3. When you are in a dream look at your hands usually in dreams you will notice that you have more or less fingers. 4. Look for un-ordinary stuff. Maybe you will be in your room for one minute then Egypt for the next. That will be an obvious sign to your mind that you are dreaming.

I believe that lucid dreaming is a very important because it helped create many groundbreaking achievements that led to the change in history .  It also is a very exciting way to relieve stress.

What I think of this, this issue is important for you to know about because with this strategy you can relieve stress easier and improve memory.

Synesthesia – Grace

I choose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to research about, and it was surprising for me that synesthetes (people who have synesthesia) see words or numbers as certain colors, sounds, or smell.  Only 1 and 2000 people have this disorder, but it was kind of mind-blowing that people only can see colours, smell, and hear instead of seeing the actual objects, and I couldn’t really imagine it. And, people have some stereotypes to synesthetes, and for example one of the stereotype is that synesthetes are bad at math. I wanted to know why do people created these stereotypes, so I thought it would be fun to research about it.

By doing this topic, I learned that synesthesia could genetically be passed from parents to child, so if one of your family memebers have synesthesia, you might also have it. Also, there isn’t a solution to cure synesthesia so once you have it, you have to live your entire life having synesthesia. There are different kind of syenesthesias, but one of the most common one is colour-graphemic synesthesia, when you see numbers or words in a certain colour. For example, if you have colour-graphemic synesthesia, you might see 7 as red. There are different ones related to smell and hearings, it is when you see numbers or words in a certain smell or sound. Some examples are that you might smell the number 6 as smell of soap and number 5 as a sound of whistle. And there are some negative and positive effects of synesthesia. One positive effect is that if you have synesthesia, you have a good memory and you can remember things really easily. One negative effect is you might feel isolated because people think that you are weird, you see different thing as them, so you might fee isolated from the society. The last thing I learned was that you have to be patient, because synesthetes have hard time to remember all the smells, colors, and sound just by hearing. So, you have to be patient with them and kindly repeat the word or numbers you said or help them to remember it.
