Blindness – Ruhaan

Blindness is the inability of a person to see very little or nothing. I chose this issue because there are so many people in the world who are visually impaired or just blind. The cool thing is that some people are used to living without their sight and can do things we do. I knew that being blind is not being able to see at all. This affects teenagers because anyone can get glasses whether it’s inherited from your parents or you strain your yes to much. Fortunately my eyes are fine and don’t need glasses. What I learned is that Diabetes can damage your eyes…?! I got relieved that diabetes damage your eyes and I don’t have diabetes. It’s hard to believe but people learn, talk do normal things like us but don’t actually see what’s going on. There is a method to learn how to read when someone is blind, it’s the Braille system where you feel the words, I personally don’t understand it. I believe that we students should be responsible for what we do to our eyes and we should protect our eyes.

Tourettes Syndrome – Eve

Tourette’s Syndrome, or TS, is a physical disorder of the brain. People with Tourette’s have vocal and/or motor tics. This is when they blink, twitch, shrug, grunt, clear their throat, and even swear. They feel impulses to do these things, though it can be controlled for short periods of time. People with TS can control it for up to ten or fifteen minutes, but that only results in having more tics afterwards. Interestingly, tics subside when the person, is engaged and absorbed in something they are interested in. Many people with Tourette’s also suffer from OCD, attention deficit disorder, anxiety and depression. They tend to avoid social situations and therefore become reclusive to escape embarrassment. Symptoms of TS start in childhood and it is rare to be diagnosed with it 18yrs and after. Strangely, Tourette’s is more common in males than in women. Peter the great, Samuel Johnson, Mozart, Napoleon and Tim Howard all have Tourette’s Syndrome. I chose this topic because I think that it is interesting that they cannot control what they do, but also inspiring that they can still lead a revolution.

Anusha Thomas – Anxiety

The term Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. I chose this because I have anxiety and basically I just get super stressed about the littlest things. This affects me and all teenagers who have it because I can’t sleep, I get headaches, I get dizzy, I don’t work as well and if it is really bad sometimes I hyperventilate for long periods of time. Other people can go through a state of depression. Anxiety is an important thing to know about because it can happen to anyone and they won’t know how to deal with it. I know that this it’s super harmful and it can get very bad if not helped. A lot of people have anxiety and a lot have recovered and still done really well. But their are a lot who have anxiety life long and it is horrible for them. People such as Emma Stone, Superwoman or Lily Singh, Jennifer Lawrence, Adele, Beyonce and Taylor Swift. If you notice these are all girls and their is a reason for that. 25 % of teens have anxiety disorder and 30% of all teen girls have it. One of the reasons people have anxiety is because of negative attributional styles. Positive and negative attributional styles is when you infer about something based on events and behavior. An example of this would be if a 2 people failed a math test the person with negative attributional styles would say I failed this math test I am dumb, I will never be good at math. A person with positive attributional styles would say I failed this math test “I failed this math test because my teachers make hard tests. I will do better in math next time and my marks will improve”. Girls tend to think with negative attributional styles. This does not mean that boys don’t get anxiety and that all girls have anxiety. It just means that Girls have a tendency to get more anxious about things.

I learned that their are many reasons to why people have anxiety and that girls have more of an instinct to be anxious. My opinion on this topic is that anxiety is a harmful thing that can destroys people’s lives. It happens to so many people. 18.1 % of adults in the U.S have anxiety. That is about 40 million people with anxiety in the ages of 18 – 54. Keep in mind about 30 % don’t even know  they have anxiety. This is just in the U.S and only adults who know about.  What was interesting to know was that people with anxiety disorders usually got it passed down from their family, more sensitive to stench, it upsets their balance and it is the most common mental illness in the U.S. My thinking has changed because I thought that once you have anxiety you can’t get rid of it. This isn’t true you can do many things to get rid of anxiety such as exercise visit a psychiatrist, eliminate caffeine, meditate, limit social media and more. Common misunderstandings about this topic is that people who have this are weak, the disorder is very common, people should just avoid whatever they fear and they you can’t tell and anxious person to relax it just won’t work. This influences my thinking about wellness because it showed me that all the parts of wellness are connected. Anxiety connects mental, social, emotional, physical, environmental and spiritual. It is related to mental because it is a mental issue, social because you don’t feel like going out and meeting people. You just want to be alone. Emotional, because you feel not so great about yourself. Physical, spiritual and environmental because exercise, meditation and being in a nice environment can help anxiety.

Jordan Elijah Prince – Sleep Talking

The health issue I would like to present today is sleep talking. This issue is important because if it is not solved now, it might result in various kinds of disasters while sleeping. I picked this issue because I myself sleep talk at times.

This issue affects teenagers because as they wake up, it weakens their ability to think. They also get distracted which leads them to unnecessary problems. I learned that, half of all kids between the age of 3 and 10 carry on conversations while asleep and about 5% of adults sleep talk as well. I also learned that, sleep talking is most likely to be inherited. Some interesting facts about this issue are:

  1. Sleep talking is usually about what happened during the day.
  2. Sleep talkers might answer questions if you ask them.
  3. Sleep talking can occur at any stage of sleep.

It affects me because, I lack sleep due to sleep talk. This makes me tired and makes me lack concentration. Some problems with sleep talk are, though it is not harmful, it can be very embarrassing for the patient. PatIents who sleep talk might try to avoid sleeping near others in fear that they might disrupt someone else’s sleep. Some solutions to avoid sleep talk is to get enough sleep, stop eating before bed, avoid late night caffeine, make your sleep environment more comfortable, follow a regular sleep schedule, avoid looking at screens for a long time right before bed, and avoid excessive amount of stress. My opinion is that, people need to practice the solutions mentioned above in order to get a healthy sleep. I believe that the concept of sleep talking can be applied to new situations because other sleep disorders like sleepwalking, may be related to sleep talking.

In conclusion, this issue is important for you to know about because, if people don’t know how to deal with this problem properly, they might wake up disturbed which leads to lack of concentration during the next day. This issue is important to me because, I myself sleep talk and end up having bad side effects. To help solve this problem, you need to get enough sleep, stop eating before bed, avoid late night caffeine, make your sleep environment more comfortable, follow a regular sleep schedule, avoid looking at screens for a long time right before bed, and avoid excessive amount of stress. If we follow these steps, we can solve this issue.

Pepi Mercado – “Identity” (And a bit about Self-Esteem)

Hello! My name is Pepi Mercado and for the Grade 7 Wellness (H Block), I cHello! My name is Pepi Mercado and for the Grade 7 Wellness (H Block), I chose Identity as my Health Buzz topic. I chose Identity as my topic because I have had a very messy history with my own identity and I think that everybody and anybody can benefit from some inside knowledge and advice. If you’re wondering about what I mean by “a messy history”, I mean that when I was going through a very rough stage in my life, I had a very hard time staying true to myself and who I was as a person. A way that these connections have expanded my learning was simply experience, therefore knowing how to recognize which areas of struggles with one’s Identity can be solved with which types of strategies. (Hard to believe, I know, but that was English.) I think that this topic is very important to me because it was -and still is- a very large part of my life. I was going through the Emotional Changes of Puberty when I went through what’s called an Identity Crisis and I almost became a different person entirely. This can easily affect any teenager -if they spend lots of time thinking about what they will do with their life- because a teenager’s daily life and health habits are changed based off of who they are. EG: Some people may dream of becoming an Olympic Contestant, meaning their daily life may involve lots of exercise, which affects a person’s wellbeing, physical state and self-esteem.

What did you learn about this issue? When I looked deeper into the effects of this issue, I learnt that the causes were also variant. Self-Esteem issues may lead to problems with Identity because a person does not feel they are doing things correct, which may then lead to thoughts that their life is completely incorrect. This is similar to the mindset of those who are clinically depressed or simply just cynical. If I had a summary for Identity Issues, I would’ve said that it’s your own world crumbling in front of you. After research and more open observations, I would say that it’s a whole bunch of negative thoughts directed toward yourself based off of your own made-up misconceptions of yourself. I believe that those negative thoughts can really affect a person’s emotional health status and their social health. It affects my thoughts about wellness because at first I thought wellness was just a “How to deal with physical stuff in puberty” class, but it’s actually a time where people can learn about changes in life and now I’m thinking about how we can help one another overcome hard times.

Congratulations! You read everything. Here’s a picture to rest your mind from letters and commas:hose Identity as my Health Buzz topic. This issue affects teenagers because it will affects teenagers because if we don’t take good care then we will not well to do the things we love to do.I learned that if we don’t take good care then we will get hurt doing our sport. Some interesting facts about this issue are:that if you do swimming you have to take care of your hole body .If you any kind of sport then you have to be fit so you don’t get hurt like getting cramps and headaches..If you don’t do well on your body then when you get hurt when you older the your body will get the pane when you were little  I believe that we need to take care of your body then you will get hurt real easy. Polio disease

Polio is a abbreviation for Poliomyelitis.Polio paralyses your limbs by killing the nerves. This disease is a virus that first started in an Louisiana in 1841, Polio at that time also went spreading around Europe but it wasn’t a big deal and later on it disappeared. This fatal disease has return in Nigeria and is causing trouble by attacking the population. But why did Polio form in Nigeria? Judging by the dirtiness and the evil bacterias that Nigeria has is a perfect escenario for Polio to form. This mostly affects kids and it kills 5% of the kids it attacks and the remain paralytic for their lives. This kids could avoid this by taking a vaccine but for those kids they are too poor to afford that. Franklin D. Roosevelt also suffered the disease at the age of 39, and got paralysed for his life. When this disease hits old people they don’t get paralysed at first because they are stronger but later on, their muscles grow weak and they get paralysed.

I chose this to do my presentation because this disease could easily come to the the PH and we should be aware because it could badly harm us. I also choose this because is a unique a and pretty interesting topic to talk about and to inform. I also choose this to inform other people of this disease that could be easily passed on by someone coughing or sneezing on your shoulder. So this presentation is to warn you. This has changed my thinking of improving my healthy habits like to wash more my hands and drink more water. This also helped me be more aware of my surroundings.
