Panic Disorder – Monica Holopainen

Panic Disorder: a type of mental illness that is defined by spontaneous panic attacks that don’t seem to have a real cause. This issue is important because it is a mental disorder, something in which 450 million people around the world have to deal with every single day, and has contributed to the way they act or feel on a daily basis. I chose this issue I am a very anxious person, and I wanted to know more about the disorders that have to do with anxiety. Many teenagers get panic attacks, and can eventually develop disorders like this one once they get older.

Over the course of my research, I learned that women are actually more susceptible to getting the panic disorder than men. There is no clear reason why this is, or why any anxiety disorder is caused at all. I also learned about Agoraphobia, which is when people with anxiety disorders get panic attacks in the same place they have had panic attacks in before. This is a very common thing with people who have the panic disorder, as about one in three people that have a panic disorder have agoraphobia along with it. These two combined can cause some people to not want to go to public/crowded places, or worse, even leave the house.  The panic disorder, however, can come along with other mental/physical disorders such as asthma, depression or substance abuse. I believe that it is very sad that so many people nowadays are living with mental disorders, and that they are true warriors that need to be appreciated more.

The photo shows a girl to scared to leave her house because of agoraphobia; when people get panic attacks are in a certain place/situation, which can cause them to not want to leave the house.

In conclusion, I do believe that this is a very important issue because so many people in the world are dealing with this mental disorder and mental disorders in general. If you know someone with a mental disorder or this specific disorder, please talk to them and tell one of our guidance counselors, if they’re alright with that.

Synesthesia – Jack Breuhaus

Synesthesia is an amazing condition where different senses interact. The most famous example of this is the book A Mango Shaped Space. This book sparked my interest in it and persuaded me to do my health buzz on it. Scientists predict that anywhere from 1-200 people have it or 1-100000, so as you can guess it only affects a very small amount of people. However it changes the lives of people who do have it.

What Synesthesia does is make it so senses interact. The most common type of Synesthesia is Grapheme – Color Synesthesia which is where different numbers and letters all have colors to them. This means that for example the letter A might be bright yellow. However every single sense can interact. For example a person who has Synesthesia might taste ice cream, whenever they smell peanuts. In conclusion, Synesthesia is an astounding condition that affects a very small amount of people.

Immortality and the Process of Cell Transdifferentiation- Xavier

Immortality. It’s something our civilization has puzzled over since the dawn of time. As a child, my 8 year old brain marveled over the exploits of Ponce de León and the Fountain of Youth. But as far as the average person is aware, immortality is just a myth. Well, today I’ll be telling you about how it may not be. Immortality is important as such a discovery could change our whole world, affecting everyone, including us. We could exist without a care in the world, not bothering to stay fit, as we could live forever.

Have you heard about the process of cell transdifferentiation? You most likely haven’t, so I’ll explain it. I learned that cell transdifferentiation is a cell condition in which your cells transform from one type to another. One creature, the Turritopsis Dornhii (also known as the Immortal Jellyfish) uses this unique process to it’s advantage. You see, the Turritopsis Dornhii is called the “Immortal” Jellyfish for a reason; it can revert from an adult into an infant. It’s cells convert from that of a sexually mature stage into that of a sexually immature stage. The process can be likened to a chicken turning into an egg, which then hatches into another chicken. I used to think that immortality could be good for our health, but I now realize that it would give us no incentive to exercise or be healthy. In addition, we are at least decades away from achieving immortality, and we have to realize that if we want to live the longest life we can, the best way is to be fit.

How “Pokémon Go” Is Good For Your Brain– Andrew Molloy

The health topic I would like to present today is How Pokémon Go is good for your brain. This issue is important because People are saying that Pokémon is the worst thing for you brain. I picked this issue because I am a Pokémon Go player and I love playing it. If  you are wonder what team I am, I will you it show what team I am on the presentation.

This issue effect all ages brain meeting random people, doing exercise, going outside. I learned that by doing research. Some interesting fact that I found about this topic are 1.That users are logging average of 43 minutes each day. 2. The game came out on July 5th 2016 and it the most popular app in both IPhone and Android app store. 3. Final Psych-Central, psychologist John M. Grohol reported that Pokémon Go was helping users to “get outside, take a walk, talk to others and explore the world”. I believe that Pokémon Go is a great for your brain.

It is important for the class to know that Pokémon Go doesn’t mess up your mind it help you brain to be less stress and calm. It important to me because if you hear people say “Don’t play Pokémon Go its horrible for your brain” Just think about what I just told you about Pokémon Go. So when you are not at school and you are bored a home just get Pokémon Go if you don’t have it, GO CATCH THEM ALL.

To begin with, the Health Issue I’d like to present today is Social Benefits of SnapChat.
This Issue is important because many kids and teenagers have been using SnapChat the wrong way, meaning not the way they are suppose to use it. I picked this issue because it is important for kids, teenagers, or adults that SnapChat is also for News in what’s happening everything or about anyone. It’s not only for just snapping your friends and posting on your story.

Also, this issue affects teenagers when they snap their friends using inappropriate words and snaps that are in illegal places. I learned that SnapChat is not only bad for you but it may bring joy and laugh when using filters and News from everywhere, when you need it maybe for current events or may help you in your studies in school.

Some interesting facts about this issue are:                                                                          1. When SnapChat first started 2011 it was named Picaboo, but in 2012 it was renamed SnapChat.                                                                                                                           2. In 2015, SnapChat made many filters which people can use in pictures and videos, which increased the population of the app.                                                                           3. SnapChat has become very popular which Facebook is now a rival app. SnapChat ranks as #2 just behind Facebook.

I believe that SnapChat has made us very social in snapping our friends but it also helped us learn more things around us, neither than Instagram or Twitter.                                      In Conclusion, this issue is important for you to know about SnapChat because you may be using it not not the way your suppose to. To help solve this problem, you can stop using inappropriate words or pictures in places that you are not suppose to go (illegal) and start exploring the fun hilarious news on Snapchat. Why are humans afraid of the dark? – Allen

Let’s face it. We’ve all been scared of the dark before. But why? That’s what I’m about to tell you. For starters, I chose this topic because I have aways been afraid of the dark. Just a sideways glance at some scary image can render me insomniac for days, if not weeks. In turn with learning a lot about human genetic memory and how we are affected by it, towards the end of my project I realized that many students are bullied because they seem weak, possibly rotting from a fear of something, say the dark. But if we embrace the fact that the fear is normal and actually has kept our species alive for several thousand years, maybe people will change and realize that there’s nothing to be ashamed of, or even better, they could fix (in part, at least) their fear of the dark.

I learn’t that humans are genetically afraid of the dark, the unknown. That means that we are naturally, inherently afraid of the dark. There are many reasons as to why, such as media influence and, perhaps, scary bedtime stories. But the main reason is that back when we weren’t the top predator, going outside of your home cave at night to go pee mean’t certain death, so gradually, in order to survive the night,we developed a genetic fear for the dark, and the unknown. Combine that with the fact that humans are mostly sight oriented and cannot function well in the dark, and you have why we’re afraid of the dark. For example, if we all knew and accepted the fact that slender-man is just looking for friends, we wouldn’t fear him as much as some of us do now. I used to think that people just grew out of the “fear of the dark” stage sometime around high school, and that smaller people were just wussy. But now, I know two things: It is okay to be afraid of things, especially the dark, and two, this kind of fear can go away, if we just realize that in the dark, and really on the whole planet, you are the most dangerous thing there is. Our ancestor’s fear were rooted in the fact that they weren’t as the tiger that lived next door.
