The Power of Persuasion – Jahaan Sachdeva

First of all, persuasion is not manipulation – manipulation is pressuring through force to get someone to do something that is not in their own interest and persuasion is the art of getting people to do things that are in their own best interest that also benefit you. People have done many crazy things in life, like have you ever had that moment in life when you were in elementary school and your friend asked you to do something. You did it, you got in trouble and that friend got away clean. Most likely, he persuaded you to do it. I have used persuasion many times before and have been persuaded many times before. Using the power of persuasion is a dangerous art. I chose this issue because I wanted to learn more about what people have done, using persuasion, to get into trouble, out of trouble, and also about how it affects their social life.

My connection to this issue is everyone that I have met. Actually, not just the people that I have met, all the people in the world have used persuasion or have been persuaded at least once in their life, in sales the sellers will always try to sell you their products and house brokers will always try to sell you houses. All of these people have one goal in common and that is to persuade you to buy their products or a house. This issue will expand my learning because if I knew how to successfully persuade someone I would get what I want and they would get what they wanted. Not manipulation but the power of persuasion.

This issue is relevant to me because I have used persuasion many times before and as I mentioned earlier I wanted to know about how using powerful persuasion affects the social life of people, their friends and their family. It is important because from my past experiences I have been persuaded by other people to say stuff to my friends and I have been persuaded that some people are bad based on other people’s’ opinions. This affected my social life and it is important to me because I want to learn how it has affected other people’s social lives.

The kind of persuasive thing that most affects teenagers are ads. Ads have a persuasive influence on teens. Ads are targeted toward teenagers because of teenagers’ persistent attitudes. From persuading their parents to upgrade their cell phone or to get them a new iPod with more memory to tempting a friend to buy the cute shirt that just happens to be their size too. Teenagers, on average, spend an amount of $155 billion per year on advertised products, also influencing their parents to spend another $200 billion per year.

The things that I learned about this issue are that persuasion is basicly the art of talking people into doing what you want them to do or not to do. Like if your friends don’t wanna go see a certain movie you persuade them to do so by telling them how great it is and how much fun you will have. Another thing that I learned is that while the art and science of persuasion has been around since the time of the Ancient Greeks, there are significant differences between how persuasion occurs today and how it has occurred in the past. For example, led by Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus, they stabbed Julius Caesar to death in a location adjacent to the Theatre of Pompeii on the Ides of March 15, 44 BC. Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus persuaded a group of men to help them assassinate Julius Caesar, a Roman statesman, general and notable author of Latin prose. These days you could persuade someone to do your chores or even your homework.

My thinking about the issue with persuasion was that it was just another synonym for manipulation and that it was just forcing someone to do work so that only you would benefit. My thinking about the issue with persuasion now is that it is that when persuading someone you have to let them know that they will also benefit from it, show them the positive side, appeal to them. This influences my thinking in Wellness because it will give me more background knowledge on similar topics. Persuasive technique affects your social life which can then affects your emotional health, suppose you were persuaded to do something to a friend of yours and then that friend didn’t want to talk to you, that would leave you feeling stressed. Your stress, emotional health, would affect your exercise, physical health; you were so stressed that you didn’t get enough exercise.
