What is Marijuana?
Marijuana is a shredded, green-brown mix of dried flowers, stems, and leaves from the plant, Cannabis sativa. It is a drug. Eventually a drug can change your body functions.

Why is the issue of the drug, marijuana important to be informed to others?
It is important for the issue of marijuana to be informed to other people, because otherwise many people will not know the severe things that marijuana brings to your body. Also other people tend to get more easily addicted to it. Make sure that you don’t mimic other people when they take marijuana. It is bad. There is a large percentage of people taking marijuana. It is really a drug!

Why I chose this issue?
I chose this issue, because I want to go deeper into the ability of learning about the severe impacts of using drugs. Marijuana is one drug. I would like to be able to find some reliable source information for at least a drug that I have not encountered much. Marijuana is drug, that I don’t know much about. So I want to research and learn about it.

What are some long term effects of marijuana on everybody?

What are some solutions to fix the marijuana issues?
Don’t mimic other people if they are taking marijuana.
Don’t take marijuana, even though the advertisements are keeping you captivated by it and making you crave for marijuana.
Make healthy choices.
Don’t even think or mind about marijuana and don’t read any information that makes you crave for it.

What are my opinions about marijuana?
It is the only drug that is a plant.
It can change body functions straight away if you go near it or smell it.
Marijuana is violent, of course.

Body Image-Risliana


Body Image is an inner view of your outer self, or your perception which is often not based on reality. Body Image has four components that are Visual, Mental, Emotional, Kinesthetic. Which I will further go in detail later on. Visual is how you “see” yourself in the mirror. Mental is what you believe and think about your appearance which can be positive or negative. Emotional is how you feel about your body, including height, weight, and shape. And lastly Kinesthetic which is how you feel in your body not just about your body. So what is a body positive image? It is the realistic perception of your body or shape. People with positive body images don’t measure worth by weight or size. They also feel comfortable in their body, they don’t buy into the ideal or perfect body shapes. Negative Body Image is an image that develops when her or his body does not measure up to family, social, or media standards. People who have a negative body image may look in the mirror and see themselves or their body parts different from the way they really are.

How does body image affect teenagers?

This issue affects teenagers because usually body image struggles start when you are getting older. Body image is an issue start as young as 12 and older because teenagers spend more time or social media and become more aware of celebrities, media, and advertisements. Media plays a huge role in negative body image because people actually fall in their trap.

Why is it important?

This issue is very serious because poor body image can lead to several mental health issues. This is also important because 95% teenagers that watch reality television find apperance important. 1 in 5 teenagersare not satisfied with their body. Also 30 million people is the US have eating disorders and several of them are due to their body image. The level of Anorexia and Bulimia are increasing rapidly every year. Also, every year, more girls want to be thin while more guys what want to be more muscular.

How does this relate to me?

This issue does not personally relate to me. But I am sure everyone have you must have said “I am too short.” “why I am I not skinny.” “why can’t I be that muscular.”

In conclusion, I think it’s important to emphasize the internal beauty like improving self esteem and self confidence. Be happy in your own skin and accept yourself the way you are and learn to love yourself for the totality of who you are being, and not what you look like.

Nicole – Anorexia

I chose this topic because I recently found out that many people die from it. This issue is relevant to me because sometimes, I see anorexic people on the news and I sometimes get scared because of how thin they are. So this made me want to learn about it more. This affects teenagers because if they are anorexic, they could become way too thin or underweight. Also, teenagers with anorexia have low self-esteem and tend to feel bad about how they look, so they starve themselves to achieve the body they want.

I learned that people with anorexia actually die! Also, I learned that anorexia has various symptoms such as dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, fainting, binge eating and weight loss. In addition, only 1 out of 10 men and women receive treatment. My thinking has changed about this because I only thought that people with anorexia are “thin”, but know I realised that they are the unhealthy kind of “thin”. This also helps me understand the difference with being physically fit and the unhealthy kind of underweight.


Adi – Autism

I chose this topic because I could connect to it. One of my best friends was autistic, and I want to understand autism more. This subject is relevant to me because I want to understand why she used to be the way she was. I remember, when my friend was autistic, feeling very confused and freaked out at her behavior. Understanding autism is important because it helps us be more patient and understanding of one another, and of autistic people. It’s not an autistic person’s fault that they’re a little out of the ordinary. This condition affects teenagers all around the world because they might be autistic, or know someone who is autistic. Also, they might have bullied someone who is autistic, and they might feel sorry now they know that person is autistic, and not just weird.

What I learned while researching for my health buzz is that autistic kids are not that different from other people, except they see the world from a whole new perspective. Also, autism is not something that necessarily needs to be cured, it is something that needs to be understood. Autism is basically a mental disease that develops during childhood. It causes difficulty in communicating, difficulty in forming relationships with other people, and ‘social quirks’. Autism is a growing problem, with now 1 out of every 68 children in the US with autism. Autism ranges in severity, and can be lifelong, or temporary. Ways to treat autism are using the ABA technique, or Applied Behavior Analysis, and removing all artificial foods and chemicals from the child’s diet. My thoughts towards autism are as follows. Autism is not negative nor positive, it is simply a different state of being, though it is not optional. People with autism should not be bullied, they should be treated with as much respect as everyone else, and they should be accepted. Autism is a very special condition, and I am glad to have researched this topic. When I researched autism, much of what I read was familiar, but now my understanding of autism has deepened, and I now know that autism is curable, that it is connected to the foods one eats, and of other ways of curing autism. We are studying healthy foods in wellness, and I now realize that food affects many things, including the behaviors of autistic people. It is very important, more than I had thought, to eat healthily.


I think this picture accurately describes autism because to us, sometimes an autistic kid’s world might seem upside down. Also, kids with autism do this their whole lives – they look at the things differently.

Color Blindness by: Sajid

I chose this topic because I found it really interesting and I wanted to go deep into the subject. So that I can find what is the science behind color blindness. I found it really cool that your eyes can deceive you. My connection to this is that color is a really cool thing. Some living things can see it other can only see black and white. This can affect teenagers like us because it can be hard to tell which color is which. If for example if you have a test that says, “What color is this?” You wont be able to know. This can relate to me because when I took the test for color blindness, I couldn’t see most of the numbers. That means that I have a hard time telling which color is which. So that I can have hard time distinguishing 2 colors that might be similar.

What I learned about this topic is that over 200 million people are color blind. When I found out that I really wanted to learn more about it. The things that I learned about color blindness is that most of the time people wont see only black and white rather distinguishing color such as red, green, and sometimes blue. I also learned the science behind color blindness. color blindness is where on of your cones (L-cone, M-cone, S-cone) are missing or damaged. There is cure to color blindness. Enchroma invented glass where people can see color. This has changed my thinking a lot about color blindness because the science behind is amazing.

HEALTH BUZZ The Effects of Video Games by Suren

I chose this issue because many people around the world play video games and sometimes, too many. My connection to this is that I am one of these people, though I always limit myself to a certain amount of time, but there are a certain amount of people who don’t limit themselves and play 24/7 without taking any breaks. Many people die because of this. It is good to know how many hours of video games you play each day, so if you think that you play too much you can limit yourself. Sometimes playing video games can be a bit important, as it can actually help your mind grow. For example games like The Legend of Zelda and LEGO video games help exercise the brain, as it has puzzles and clues, it can help the brain become stronger and smarter. Video games can affect teenagers strongly, if they play too much and get addicted. This can cause them to lose their friends, family and their social life.

By researching this issue I learned all the good and bad effects of video games, and how they can destroy your social life. I don’t think that kids or even adults should play too many video games as it can cause them to become mad, lose their social and physical life and that they should limit themselves to a certain amount of time each day or week. This helps me understand more in depth about how video games can be bad for your health and makes me more careful not to spend too much time on video games.


Benefits of Fruits and Vegetables By: Katya

For my Health Buzz I chose the topic of the benefits of fruits and vegetables. I chose this because fruits and vegetables have always been apart of my life and I have always been introduced to them and liked them. They are also a very big part of our health and they are super good and healthy. I also chose this because one of my family members basically hates fruits and likes a few vegetables. This is also relevant to me because I want to explain to my family member how important it is that fruits and vegetables need to be in our lives. My family member is very healthy, but I feel like she needs to eat more fruits and vegetables to have lots of vitamins and minerals in her. This can expand my learning to also show me and everyone how fruits and vegetables are super important in our lives and how they help our bodies to function properly. This is also a very important topic because a lot of people don’t know how much fruit, vegetables and all of the other nutrients you need in your body to stay healthy. This can also help inform people to start eating healthier. Did you know this also affects kids/teens our age? I have been noticing that many kids have been deciding to eat unhealthy rather than healthy. For example in our own canteen if you look around the stores with the most full lines are basically everything except Juju Eats. Juju Eats is basically our only healthy food choice and if you look at it, the line is basically empty. Juju eats sells healthy food like salad (veggies) and everything good for you, but everyone thinks that this food is horrible and choose the unhealthy choice.


What I learned from my topic was how fruits and vegetables are super good for you and how they are super helpful in your body. I also learned that we need fruits and vegetables everyday because they are a big part of our 6 nutrients. The way my thinking has changed is because now I am going to try and eat more fruits and vegetables because now I know how important they are for our bodies, and also now I can try to change the way that other people think and explain to them. The way this has influenced my thinking about wellness is that being healthy is always the right answer, and now I know to always make good choice through wellness class.


The Benefits of Drinking Water – Sagarika

Drinking water every day is a key component of optimal health. This water must be pure water though, clean and safe. Unfortunately, many make the mistake of forgoing water for other types of fluids, most of which have added ingredients that will not do your health any favors. These contain excessive amounts of sugar and are nowhere near healthy. Kids are particularly prone to drinking sweet drinks like soda and fruit juice instead of plain water, and many teens tend to reach for sports and energy drinks instead. According to a recent Harvard study, more than half of American children are dehydrated, which can have MAJOR repercussions for their health and academic performance. About one-quarter of children in the US do not drink water on a daily basis, and according to one 2011 analysis, about 70 percent of boys aged 2-19 drink sugary beverages daily.

Your body consists of about 65 – 70% of water, and once your body has lost between one to two percent of its total water content, it will signal its needs by making you feel thirsty. Using thirst as a guide to how much water you need to drink is one obvious way to ensure your individual needs are met, day-by-day. However, the thing is, by the time your thirst mechanism actually kicks in, you’re already in the early stages of dehydration, so be sure that you don’t want to ignore the initial sensations of thirst. Moreover, the thirst mechanism tends to be underdeveloped in children, making them more vulnerable to dehydration. The elderly are also at heightened risk. Hunger—sugar cravings in particular—can also be a sign that your body is crying for water, so, when you feel hungry, drink a glass of water first, and see if that helps. if you do not drink enough water, some of the effects on your body may be:

  • Fatigue and/or dizziness
  • Foggy thinking and poor concentration
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dull, dry skin and/or pronounced wrinkles
  • Chills
  • Mood Swings
  • Back or joint ache
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Bad Breath
  • Sugar cravings

Your body is prone to keep having these signs if you do not drink enough water, though other than thirst, these are other signs that your body needs you to drink too. Keep in mind that severe dehydration can often also be fatal. The standard guidelines are to drink 8 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but your needs can vary significantly considering factors such as your activity level and weather conditions, because in reality, it is virtually impossible to determine a general guideline that will apply to everyone, all the time.

Now, I know I have talked about the fact that you should drink water and the effects if you don’t, but what if you do? Once you drink a sufficient amount of water according to your needs, you will see some marvelous effects on your body. These include, but are not limited to:

They always say to have a balance diet and not have too much of anything, but that’s not the case with water! Drink as much water as you want, and you will be fine. In fact, the more water you drink, the healthier you are! Just make sure not to drink water one hour before or after eating, because water dilutes the acid in the stomach, which stops it from breaking down food in the proper manner, and so you can’t digest properly. So now, how this connects to me, and why I chose this topic to talk about: My mom is a nutritionist, and is always telling me to drink water. I drink 3 glasses of water in the morning, before going to school, and 2 glasses in the evening after coming back. But why? I wanted to know that why is it so necessary? Well now I know. Another reason is because on of my uncles just had seizure, and when they looked into it, they saw that one of the small reasons was overworking of the body, but the major reason? DEHYDRATION. When i heard this I felt like I should look into the topic.

Did you know that according to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation, at least 1.8 billion people worldwide are estimated to drink water that is contaminated with excrement? There are 180 million people without water access in South, West and Central Asia, 186 million without water access in Southeast, East Asia and Oceania and 358 million without water access in Africa? Did you know that the water crisis is the #1 global risk based on impact to society (as a measure of devastation), and the #8 global risk based on likelihood (likelihood of occurring within 10 years) as announced by the World Economic Forum in January 2015? 750 million people around the world lack access to safe, clean water, which is approximately one in nine people! That is a lot of people, but unlike these unfortunate 750 million, you do have access to safe, clean, sanitized water, so make use of it. Remember to drink lots and lots of water a day, especially when you are thirsty, because you know what that means! Thank you!

Progeria – Bianca

Why did you choose this issue?
I chose this topic because once when I was browsing YouTube a documentary popped up in my suggestion box. Me being in 4th grade didn’t know what Progeria was so I clicked on it, curious. At first I thought that I wasn’t going to like the video since it was 45 minutes long and a documentary. But, to my surprise I watched it (the full 45 minutes) and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to know more. Now a couple years later I have watched the YouTube video on Progeria countless times and still find it fascinating. So, when I heard that I could choose any topic I immediately thought of the video and that this could be my chance to learn more about the condition.

What are your connections?
I don’t have personal connections to Progeria but, I can picture that they have a very hard time walk and doing ordinary things. I remember when I injured my foot (ankle) for a couple weeks and I couldn’t play sports, walk, run, or do anything else beside sit and do nothing. Since they have stiff joints and fragile bones I imagine that they feel the same way. Which, must be hard for them but, they don’t show it.

How is this issue relevant to you?
This issue is relevant to me because it is something that I strongly believe in. At the end of my presentation I mention that we need to appreciate every second of our life which, I believe is extremely true. When I’m very passionate about something I become very attached to it. And to say the least, I’ve become very attached to Progeria.

Why is it important?
This is important because people, children, suffer from Progeria, there life is slowly ticking away, while other people are screwing up their life, not wanting to live. People need to be aware of this syndrome to help find a cure for Progeria which, I believe can happen. The cure to Progeria could also be the cure to antiageing which, for some beauty girls, would be life changing.

How does it affect teenagers?
This affects teenagers because the average life expectancy for Progeria is 13 which is the first year of teenager (ness). In those years people become self conscious about themselves and if you have Progeria (where your ageing abnormally fast) people might get scared of you and run away. Which, is not what you want. I want people to be aware and help them not to be scared of them. You’re probably wondering why would we be scared of them? Well, usually you’re scared of things you don’t know too much about and Progeria just happens to be one of those things that still remain a mystery.

What did you learn about this issue?
I learned that Progeria is a condition that makes children age 8-10 times faster than normal humans. Also, that it’s a very rare condition happening to about 1 in 8 billion people. It’s caused by a mutation in your Lamin A protein gene cell. That’s why people with progeria are extremely skinny and have to diet to gain weight.

What is your thinking/summary about this issue?
I think that this is an important condition and that people should be aware of it, it’s not just something that you shrug off and say I’ll worry about it later. No. I also think, that we should try to find a cure to ease the pain of people with Progeria. Imagine not being able to run due to stiff joints? That’s what it feels like to have Progeria and I believe that it needs to stop.

Louis- Health Buzz on Lack of Sleep

Why did I choose this Topic?

I noticed that a lot of 7th Graders are usually only getting the bare minimum and that on weekends they are getting under the recommended amount of sleep (10-8 hours.) Lack of sleep can have drastic effects on the body such as a gain in weight and memory loss. Many people do not know this so I thought it would be a good topic for a Health Buzz.

I also think getting enough sleep is just as important as the components of fitness since getting enough sleep can make you healthier just like the components of fitness. It actually turns out that getting less than 7 hours a day lowers your life expectancy. This means that if for example you go to bed at 11 pm and you wake up at 6 am you have slept 7 hours and this may lower your life expectancy.
