Louis- Health Buzz on Lack of Sleep

Why did I choose this Topic?

I noticed that a lot of 7th Graders are usually only getting the bare minimum and that on weekends they are getting under the recommended amount of sleep (10-8 hours.) Lack of sleep can have drastic effects on the body such as a gain in weight and memory loss. Many people do not know this so I thought it would be a good topic for a Health Buzz.

I also think getting enough sleep is just as important as the components of fitness since getting enough sleep can make you healthier just like the components of fitness. It actually turns out that getting less than 7 hours a day lowers your life expectancy. This means that if for example you go to bed at 11 pm and you wake up at 6 am you have slept 7 hours and this may lower your life expectancy. So in conclusion a lack of sleep can be one of the most healthy things to do

Emetophobia by Saiya

The topic that I have chosen for my health buzz is Emetophobia. I chose this topic because unfortunately, I am currently suffering with it. I haven’t gotten sick to my stomach in around 6 years purely because I am always dreading it. I never eat sushi due to an incident that happened a while back where I threw up after eating it. When family members get sick, I do not comfort them, I usually sprint to my room, lock the door and I do not come out. When I go to visit my family in Canada, I do not sleep in a specific bedroom due to the fact that I have thrown up in it. Emetophobia is an enormous part of my life that causes me to have frequent anxiety attacks as well as miss out on amazing experiences. A lot of people don’t understand that Emetophobia is a serious issue and that it can limit the lives to those who have it.

So first of all, what is Emetophobia? Emetophobia is the fear of throwing up. The phobia is known as a debilitating disorder because it limits what someone can do if they have it. Emetophobics generally fear themselves vomiting and become very anxious or panicked when they feel nausea, or any gastrointestinal sensation. Not going out to seafood restaurants, not eating sushi, not comforting loved ones whilst sick, constantly getting panic attacks when the slightest form of nausea appears is what Emetophobics go through every single day. In some cases, this disorder results in anorexia and malnutrition due to the fact that people do not want to throw up.

I feel that this topic is important due to the fact that teenagers as well as adult and even children up to the age of five suffer with this disorder or phobia. Most people before reading this presentation probably had no clue as to what Emetophobia is and that is why I feel that it is necessary to address this. Fighting against your own mind can be one of the hardest things a human can do and believe it or not, people face this every single minute of their lives. Up to 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder and a portion of those deaths are caused by Emetophobia. Research has shown that teenagers that have this phobia are often the ones who end up anorexic as well as bulimic. This is extremely important to teenagers due to the fact that they are the majority of people suffering with Emetophobia. This disorder completely destroys self esteem, emotional and physical parts of the body. Saying throwing up is gross is just the beginning of it for someone who has Emetophobia. People who have this disorder have a constant fear of themselves as well as others purely based off of bad memories. Those who are unlucky enough to have this, goes through a countless number of panic attacks each day causing their physical, emotional, mental and social parts of their well being to vary.

Before doing this presentation, I thought that I had been the only one to have this phobia. I thought I was weird for having and when I tried to explain this to my friends they would literally call me crazy. When I looked up “Fear of Vomiting” I was surprised when Emetophobia showed up. This has expanded my thinking because I know now that a lot of people have gone through this and I am not the only one and I know that there is a cure to this. In some cases actually, people have had it was worse than me. I am lucky that I found out about this cure sooner rather than later so that I won’t have to live with it when I am older.

This influences my Wellness being in a countless number of ways. I know now that there is a cure to this phobia and that I may have a chance to get rid of it. It has impacted me severely just to know that there are numerous cures not only for Emetophobia but for anorexia and bulimia and almost any disease possible. When someone I know gets sick, I will emotionally support them by reminding them that they will get better and that there is something that can be done. It has also impacted my self esteem of having Emetophobia. I thought that I was the only one to have it but now that I know that others have it and have worked through it makes me feel that so can I. To summarize, I feel that throughout this presentation and this blog post I have furthered my knowledge for Emetophobia as well as the knowledge of those who have read this. Emetophobia is not a joke and those who have it should treat it almost immediately to prevent the phobia from going any further into your mindset and your ways of thinking.

I have chosen this picture because I feel that it represents all of the feelings that Emetophobics go through on a day to day basis. As you can see, fear is one of the larger words there and it displays the message that fear runs the entire operation when someone has Emetophobia. In a way, the picture below shows all the different emotions that go through and I feel that with this picture you can put you feet in someone else’s shoes that has the phobia.
