Sleep Paralysis Healthbuzz | Aubidur

I chose this because I came across an article online and I became curious (mostly because the picture looked cool). Afterwards, I researched on it some more and found it to be very interesting. When I read the article, I realised that this has occurred to me before. As a matter of fact, this has happened to me not only on multiple occasions but also last Saturday. This matter helps me understand things that have happened to me before that I never could really explain at that time. This mostly affects children but rarely teenagers because more children tend to believe in monsters and etc.

Through this, I learned that there are many things that are unexplainable to you at the moment but later on you learn it properly. Another thing that I learned was that when in a state of sleep paralysis, you are unable move your body in any way. Exactly as the title mentions, sleep PARALYSIS. As a result, Those who experience this, such as me, are forced to stay still, completely awake,  and witness the horror since you are awake but dreaming a nightmare. In conclusion, sleep paralysis is a moment of complete fear. It also feels so real that at the moment, you may feel as if you will die at the moment. This helps me understand more of what happens to me, why it happens, and how it happens.

Health Buzz Rishi (Asthma)

WHY I CHOSE ASTHMA

→ personal connection

→ Interesting phenomena

→ about 3 million cases in US alone!!
Asthma has no cure. Even when you feel fine, you still have the disease and it can flare up at any time.

Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. In the United States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. About 7 million of these people are children.

If you have asthma, you can take an active role in managing the disease. For successful, thorough, and ongoing treatment, build strong partnerships with your doctor and other health-care providers.

Sleepwalking – Noah

I chose sleepwalking because I myself have sleepwalked before and have seen many friends sleepwalk so I was interested to know more about it. It is important because it is quite common for people to sleepwalk although with the teen years the chance to sleepwalk decreases. Sleepwalking (aka somnambulism) is a sleeping disorder which makes people get up and do something while still in sleep. This might mean from sitting up in bed to wandering around outside. It mostly happens during the deeper sleep of sleeping stage 3 and 4. A full sleeping cycle is made of stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM (rapid eye movement).

Sleepwalking can run in your family so if you have a parent or a sibling who sleepwalks you have a higher chance of sleepwalking yourself. It can also be caused by things like lack of sleep or irregular sleep and sometimes even because of stress. No, sleepwalking is not dangerous at all. Most people who sleep walk just stand up and walk around. But there still are dangers such as falling down stair, bumping into something or falling of something. It is said that waking sleepwalkers up will confuse them and give them a bad mood. So if you encounter a sleepwalker slowly guide him back to his bed.

Leukaemia – Matthew

what_leukemia

Leukaemia is a rare condition affecting 20K to 200K people per year. It is basically a  cancer that doesn’t allow ones blood and bone-marrow to function properly. It lowers your white blood cell count and makes your body vulnerable to fight infection, diseases, and more. No one really knows the main causes of Leukaemia but doctors say that the main “probable cause” would be radiation.

I chose this cancer because I have read books like “Drums, Girls, Dangerous Pie” and it made me wonder about the topic. I used to think leukaemia was a cancer that made you get hurt easily and that was it. But now I know that it is much more that, your life is basically on the line and if not treated, you could die.

Anorexia – Sil

imgresAnorexia is a loss of appetite or a loss of interest in food. Sometimes people get confused and many people think that Anorexia Nervosa is the same thing but, Anorexia Nervosa is a serious mental illness. Patients have not “lost” interest in food, they have intentionally restricted their food intake because of the fear of being or becoming fat.

I chose this disorder for my health buzz because it influences many teenagers of our age, and their relatives. This can technically affect anyone and everyone should be proud and feel confident about themselves.

By doing this healthbuzz, I learned that it’s VERY important to eat and to feel good about yourself and that Anorexia also causes people to get not only physical but also emotional and mental problems, which can influence the rest of their lives.

Hydrocephalus Health Buzz by: Lucie Curry

I chose Hydrocephalus for my health buzz because I have had this condition and I didn’t know much about it so I decided this would be a good chance to learn about it. Knowing about Hydrocephalus is important because it can be diagnosed at any age.

I learned that Hydrocephalus can be diagnosed at any age, not just premature babies like I was. I thought it was an issue that was not too serious, but after researching it I now know that it is a condition that needs to be treated immediately.

Euthanasia-Razel

Scrolling through my Facebook news feed, I found an article that caught my attention.“A 29-year-old chooses to end her own life”, seeing this article left me curious.‘Why would Buzzfeed report a suicide attempt’ I decided to click on this story. I watched a video that moved me and left me speechless. It was about the Brittany Maynard fund. In this video, it explained the concept of death with dignity and how it can change how a person would end his/her life. This was the first time I have ever heard of this concept called death-with-dignity law which is a physician-assisted death and a form of Euthanasia. This interested me.

A few days ago, I came across this topic again. I discovered that this topic has been debated on for years, so I decided that this topic should be brought to the attention all people even people as young as teenagers. This is very important topic because teenagers as young as our age can give our say on this topic and greatly impact the debate on this. Our say may affect this topic and finally find a conclusion to this issue. Concluding this issue will help people with terminal diseases greatly.

Euthanasia is a medical practice of ending a person’s life. There are different types of Euthanasia. Passive and Active Euthanasia is the 2 types of Euthanasia. Passive is stopping the use of common drugs/antibiotics & life supports that prolong a dying person’s life or not doing anything to prolong a dying patient’s life. Active Euthanasia is the practice of killing with lethal substances purposely.

As seen in the picture, it is the decision that separates life and death. As explained by the active lifeline and the flat lifeline. It is in the hands of different types of people. Voluntary Euthanasia is physician assisted suicide. The decision is made by the patient him/herself. Non-voluntary euthanasia is when the decision cannot be made by the patient so a person in authority will make the decision. Involuntary Euthanasia is when the decision made is against the patient’s will. As of now, Euthanasia is only legal in Netherlands,Belgium,Luxembourg,Switzerland,Estonia,Albania, the US states of Washington,Oregon and Montana, and Canadian province of Quebec.

Before I researched about this issue, I thought Euthanasia was simply physician assisted suicide which seemed unacceptable but as I got more educated about this issue, I learned that taking the patient out of life support is also Euthanasia. Because of this research, I finally understood the situation of people with terminal diseases. Seeing the opinions of people with terminal diseases on Euthanasia, made me understand this topic. I learned that the option of Euthanasia gave them a piece of mind because they had a set date of their death and they could escape the gradually increasing pain. This made me pity them and put myself in their situation, so I became more open-minded about this topic.

Multiple Personality Disorder – Q1

Multiple Personality Disorder
By Quewon

MPD is a disorder that makes an individual have two or more personalities with different memories and behavior. This affects teenagers because I chose MPD because it always interested me.

The first time I heard about it was in a book where the main character had the disorder, and I wondered how it worked. Believing of this disorder was difficult until I dug deep into it. I learnt that people hurt their families, ruined their lives or created new lives out of them and it made me think a lot about the mind and how this could affect us.

App Helps Reduce (Stress) – Rafat

I chose the issue of stress because it interested me at how many people were claiming to be “stressed”. I also chose this as it has affected many people including myself. This issue is relevant to me because I have felt stressed at many times when there was a lot of homework and projects to be completed. This is important because stress can become a serious issue if one is feeling too much stress, it can lead to various unhealthy effects on the body. This affects many other teenagers because they have felt stressed at various points throughout the year because of schoolwork.

What I learnt about this issue is that various people are affected by it including teenagers and adults. Even though adults are stressed, it is more common in teenagers. On a recent survey conducted by the Washington Post, 83 percent of teens said that school was “a somewhat or significant source of stress.” Twenty-seven percent reported “extreme stress” during the school year. My thinking about stress is that it could be very dangerous to a person’s health, and have effect their lives unhealthily. My thinking has change about this issue as many people claimed to be very stressed, and now I have realised that too much stress can be a very dangerous thing. images
