Brain Attack- Andrea

80% OF STROKES CAN BE PREVENTED.

Turns out three isn’t really the magic number. Thanks for nothing schoolhouse rock.

Like zombies need brains, brains need blood. A stroke is caused when either a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel breaks. If this happens, blood supply is cut off, brain cells die resulting in brain damage, and abilities controlled by that section are lost (i.e. speech, movement, memory). It’s literally like your brain is under attack with nothing there to protect it.

Notice:

Certain people are at more risk of having a stroke than others. Though it can happen to anyone at anytime, people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and the elderly should pay extra attention. Symptoms of strokes will be abrupt so you have to be prepared. Some include:

  • numbness/ weakness (paralysis on one side)

  • dizziness

  • difficulty talking/ understanding- sudden confusion

  • problems with balance/ coordination

  • hard time swallowing

  • sudden and severe headaches

  • blacking out/ sudden trouble seeing

Emergency:

Time is EVERYTHING.  You can’t call 911 in the Philippines and ambulances can be useless in traffic.

What to do:

  • call a trusted adult.

  • you have drivers- use them!

  • contact the hospital, you don’t want to waiting once you get there.

  • make sure the hospital you go to has the SUPPLIES and KNOWLEDGE to treat a stroke

DO NOT RELY ON THE HOSPITAL TO GIVE YOU INFO- BE PROACTIVE; BE PREPARED.

Forget Nipping It in the Bud

Don’t even let the bud grow in the first place.

  • know blood pressure

  • identify atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rate)

  • stop smoking

  • control alcohol usage

  • control your diet and exercise

  • treat circulation problems (no fatty deposits to block arteries)

  • Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) short term stroke symptoms- get help!

Strokes happen F.A.S.T., act faster.

It could be somebody close to you. Knowing this info can save a life, or even just limit the damage. We all have grandparents at age of high risk and parents that it could happen to at any moment. Strokes will catch you by surprise. They don’t care if you’re on vacation or the timing isn’t right. Same policy with hospitals here, if we want to be real.

STROKES ARE A REAL THING

Don’t make the mistake of waiting for it to happen to you.
