OCD stands for obsessive-compulsive disorder. OCD is an anxiety disorder which is basically uncontrollable thoughts and repetitive actions/behaviors that you feel that you must do. OCD people do these irrational behaviors because they are unable to resist them. When you have OCD, the warning system in your body is not working properly and you feel like you’re in danger, even when you’re not. You become very anxious and stressed; you feel like the only way to fix the problem is to practice these behaviors, so that you feel safe.
here’s how you can tell if someone has OCD:
The person has obsessions and has compulsive behaviors that get in the way of important things and take a lot of time.
if you organize your markers in rainbow order that’s perfectly fine (most people do). However if you organize your markers constantly, take so much time organizing them, and you feel very stressed and panicked that the markers are not in a certain order, you may have OCD.
If your mother checks that the oven is turned off before you leave the house that perfectly fine, and a good idea. However, if she checks that oven is off many times and feel extremely stressed and constantly worries that the house is going to burn down, she may have OCD. Her worries are getting in the way of her life and she needs help.
common obsessions include:
– extreme fear of germs and diseases
– extreme fear of hurting themselves
– extreme fear of being responsible of something horrendous such as fire, hurting someone, burglary
– extreme fear of everything not being exact and being perfect in their mind
– extreme fear of losing things
– extreme fear of forgetting something
– not being able throw things away because they feel that it may be important
– being extremely superstitious about unlucky/lucky items
– religious obsessions such as extreme concern about offending god
– washing or cleaning items excessively
– checking things over and over again
– accumenting items which leads to hoarding
1. How is this issue relevant to you? Why is it important?
This issue is relevant to me because I have wondered what OCD exactly was. Also my Uncle has OCD problems and I wanted to learn more about this illness.
2. How does it affect teenagers?
Research has shown that around 1 in 200-500,000 kids and teens have OCD. This affects teens may have untreated OCD problems that affect their schoolwork, friendship, and everyday issues.
3. What did you learn about this issue?
I learnt that OCD can be dangerous and self-destructive. I learnt that some habits and behaviors are completely normal and some aren’t.
4. What is your final opinion about this issue?
My final opinion is that is serious problem and should be handled with care and compassion. Also we support and help people with OCD, so that they can feel loved.
5. What are some problems/solutions connected to the issue?
Some solutions to these problems are:
– getting a therapist
– cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
– certains medicines
– deep brain stimulation (DBS)
– brain surgery (in extreme cases)
Some problems can be that you can hurt yourself and the people around you. Your quality of life will decrease and you can suffer from anxiety.
6. How has your thinking changed?
I used to think that OCD was wasn’t very serious or important but now I think that is actually can be a problem for some people and it is something that can unnoticed and should be treated.
