Depression- Katie

I picked depression because, I just feel horrendous about how some of their problems are caused by us, and many others. Its important because some of the depression victims don’t ever get to see hope again, some of them kill themselves, and hurt themselves in a horrible way, which includes cutting, burning themselves, and many others. And, some people don’t even confide in anyone, or hides it away with a smile- so no one would notice. They dont want to tell anyone, as they are scared they might get judged or hurt because of it. They don’t want anyone to worry, or- well- there is A LOT of reasons why someone could be depressed and hide it away. Sometimes, the depressed person is the one who smiles all the time, or the one who laughs the loudest. It’s not always obvious to spot depression. And, its also important because now so many people joke about it and say its just an act-when its not. It is not, they have their own problems and since when do you know about their problems? You don’t, because they don’t tell anyone. It’s sick how people joke about it. It is also horrible when people don’t acknowledge it and how people say it over some of the simplest of things. Depression is horrible (understatement), and it can cause them to suicide. I also chose this topic because i am sick of hearing people say “i hate my life” or “I want to kill myself” over the most stupid of things. One of my friends told me that when they were losing in a game. Depression isnt an act, and you shouldn’t say you have it unless you have it. There are 9 types of depression: Dysthymia (its two years or more, and its less critical than major depression, but people experience periods of major depression, trouble concentrating, sleeping, etc) , Bipolar Depression/Manic Depression (Huge/dramatic mood swings, hallucinations and paranoia, sleepiness but a lot of energy, irritably, not connected and fast thoughts, critical insomnia, and more.) ,  Major Depressive disorder/clinical depression ( messes up sleeping, eating, working, studying, and etc. poor appetite or overeating; insomnia or excessive sleep;  not a lot energ; low self-esteem; can’t concentrate; and hopelessness as well as not being clear or exhaustion, serious,) are the most common. There is also Situational depression, psychotic depression, atypical depression (where you oversleep, exhaustion, overeating, a lot of sensitivity to rejection, moods that become worse, or better due to certain events) seasonal depression, postpartum (which happens because of pregnancy) depression and endogenous depression.  There are so many causes of depressions, some are so little, and some are so huge. There are also a lot of symptoms and way to fix depression-either its yours or a friends. Some of the causes are:

  1. Bullying

  2. Traumatic Experiences Life events

  3. The pressure to be perfect

  4. End of a tv show or a movie

  5. Where you live

  6. Too many choices

  7. Poor relationships

  8. Heritage sometimes

  9. Personality

  10. School

  11. Medical Illness

  12. Drug and Alcohol use

  13. Changes in the brain

And some of the many symptoms are:

  • Thinking the world will be better without you

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Changes in Sleeping patterns (insomnia, sleeping alot, or barely any sleep)

  • Feelings of guilt, or worthlessness

  • Wants to avoid social situations

  • Has lost interest in stuff that is fun, makes them happy, or etc.

  • Unable to find meaning in life

  • Become forgetful, disorganized or ‘out of it’

  • Complains of aches and pains over and over again (back pain, stomach pain, headaches)

  • Seems like a completely different person

  • Person doesnt care about their appearance, or proper grooming or etc.

  • Trouble remembering, concentrating or making decisions

Do you know that moment when you put in earphones to a song you really like, or relate to and it makes you feel instantly better? Well, it helps control depression at the same times. It helps you with your emotions in general. Counselling/Therapy is the most obvious ways to reason with it. You can help others so much, either just by smiling at them or complimenting of them- and it just helps them so much. So smile and be nice to others, you don’t know how much it can help.

People control their depression by doing bad stuff to themselves by self harming and doing drugs, which doesn’t work as the drugs most of them take are depressants. Most of them hide their feelings away, or train themselves not to feel anything any more. Those are bad, and you need to help them. There are plenty ways to free yourself/a friend from being under depression’s spell. For example: Therapy, counseling, talking, making a journal, music, social activities, get sunlight, look for help. Remember, when talking to a friend who has depression and trying to help them- be there when they need it, but not all the time as it can make you depressed to, so have some you time. To help them, acknowledge the symptoms, don’t make jokes about it, know what to say, don’t laugh or say they are overreacting, acknowledge the problem, understand, be patient and a lot more. Did you know 34, 598 suicides a year, 94 suicides per day, and one attempt every 38 seconds? Be kind, you can save a life. Kevin Berthia is a man, who was going to kill himself on the Golden Gate bridge, a police officer, Kevin Briggs talked to him, for 60 minutes and it saved his life. 8 years ago, he met with the suicidal man and saw how he was happy married man with two kids, with a successful job. On October 18, 2013- a bus driver named Darnell Barton saved a woman from jumping off Buffalo Bridge. This shows anyone can be a hero, if you’re a cop or a bus driver. You can save a life, just like those people. Another thing, is To Write Love On Her Arms, which is a non profit organization which sells stuff like hoodies, beanies, phone cases to spread the word about all the bad things happening to the people with depression and self injuring and etc. I fully support them all the way, and I hope you learn more about depression in this article. But lastly, not everyone who is depressed has marks on their arms, or sad faces, they can have smiley faces or have the loudest laugh. Depression isnt always as easy to spot. And it’s not a joke, or an act of say that they are overreacting because being depressed usually makes them vulnerable or stuff like that, so try to understand and empathize and try to help and don’t tell anyone or make fun of them. That gives you no right to call those people mean names. They are vulnerable and gullible so, don’t do anything bad to them, accept them, don’t make fun of them, empathize with them. They need it. Sorry about this sensitive topic in advance, but I really care about this topic.

That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a key.

A lot of people don’t realize that depression is an illness. I don’t wish it on anyone, but if they would know how it feels, I swear they would think twice before they just shrug it.
